Kidney Transplant in India

A detailed international-patient guide to preparing for specialist review, comparing the proposed approach and coordinating the journey around the confirmed clinical plan.

Solid-organ safeguard

Solid-organ transplantation in India is regulated by THOTA.

Clinical eligibility, donor evaluation, legal review and every required approval remain with the registered transplant hospital and competent authorities.

No organ or donor trade

InMedism does not source, sell, purchase, advertise, negotiate or promise human organs or paid donors. Commercial dealing is prohibited and punishable in India.

  • Kidney, liver and other solid-organ transplantation is governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 (THOTA), its rules and applicable NOTTO or state requirements.
  • Living-donor identity, age, relationship, medical fitness and free consent must be verified through the authorised hospital process.
  • When a donor or recipient is a foreign national, the registered hospital must determine and complete the applicable Authorization Committee, relationship-certification and medical-visa requirements before transplantation.
  • Deceased-donor registration, waiting-list priority and allocation are controlled by the authorised transplant system—not by InMedism.
  • No enquiry, estimate, travel arrangement or payment guarantees transplant approval, organ allocation, admission or outcome.
Procedure overview

Start with diagnosis and purpose.

Kidney transplantation places a healthy donor kidney into a person with kidney failure. It can provide better filtration and freedom from routine dialysis for suitable patients, but it is a treatment rather than a cure and requires lifelong anti-rejection medication and follow-up.

Kidney Transplant is a named clinical pathway, but the name alone does not define the exact treatment. Technique, complexity, expected benefit and recovery depend on the individual findings and the hospital team’s assessment.

A useful preliminary review should clarify what diagnosis is established, why this procedure is being considered, whether further tests are needed, what alternatives exist and which parts of the plan remain provisional until examination.

No outcome can be guaranteed.

Ask the treating clinician to explain patient-specific benefits, material risks, uncertainty and what may happen without treatment.

Possible indications

When a specialist may consider it

  • Advanced chronic kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Overall health adequate for transplant surgery and immunosuppression
  • No uncontrolled infection, active untreated cancer or other condition making transplantation unsafe
  • Ability to follow medicines, laboratory monitoring and long-term nephrology care
Clinical assessment

Evaluation before a recommendation

  • Cause of kidney failure, dialysis history and remaining kidney function
  • Heart, lung, vascular, infection and cancer-screening assessment
  • Blood group, HLA typing, antibody screening and donor–recipient crossmatch
  • Separate living-donor evaluation or an authorised deceased-donor pathway
Treatment options

Approaches the team may compare

  • Living-donor kidney transplantation after donor and recipient approval
  • Deceased-donor transplantation through the applicable authorised allocation system
  • Dialysis and medical management while awaiting transplantation or when transplant is unsuitable
Informed consent

Important risks to discuss

  • Bleeding, infection, blood clots or injury to nearby structures
  • Delayed graft function, which may require temporary dialysis
  • Rejection, vascular or urinary complications and possible graft failure
  • Infection, medicine toxicity and longer-term cancer risk related to immunosuppression

This is not a complete risk list. Personal risk can only be explained by the treating clinician after assessment.

Information for review

Records the hospital may request

  • Current diagnosis, symptom timeline and specialist notes
  • Relevant laboratory, imaging, pathology or functional-test reports
  • Original image files or pathology material when requested
  • Previous operations, procedures and treatment response
  • Current medicines, allergies and important medical conditions
Questions to compare

What the specialist should clarify

  • What is the goal of Kidney Transplant in this case?
  • What non-procedural or alternative procedural options are reasonable?
  • Which technique, device, implant or technology is proposed and why?
  • What are the important risks and possible need for additional treatment?
  • What recovery, rehabilitation and long-term follow-up are expected?
International patient pathway

From record review to safe return.

Clinical confirmation should lead the travel plan—not the other way around.

  1. 01

    Case preparation

Organize the diagnosis, medical timeline, reports and questions.

  2. 02

    Hospital review

Coordinate an appropriate department and preliminary opinion.

  3. 03

    Estimate and schedule

Request a written institutional estimate and expected stay.

  4. 04

    Treatment and discharge

Collect the confirmed plan, records, prescriptions and warning signs.

  5. 05

    Return and follow-up

Travel only after fitness advice and continue care at home.

Recovery planning

Before booking a return flight

  • Hospital monitoring continues until kidney function, urine output and medicines are stable
  • Frequent blood tests initially check graft function and immunosuppressant levels
  • Anti-rejection medicines and infection precautions must be followed exactly
  • International return requires transplant-team clearance and a documented local nephrology follow-up plan
Financial planning

Kidney Transplant cost in India

A current estimate depends on the exact clinical scope, hospital, treating team, devices or medicines, room category and expected stay.

Who may be considered for Kidney Transplant?

Suitability depends on the confirmed diagnosis, symptoms, test findings, previous treatment, overall health and comparison with reasonable alternatives by the treating specialist.

Can the procedure be confirmed before travel?

A hospital may provide a preliminary opinion after record review, but examination or updated tests in India may change the recommendation.

How long should I plan to remain in India?

The expected stay depends on pre-procedure evaluation, the procedure, recovery, complications and the treating team’s travel-fitness advice.

How can I request the current cost?

Use the linked cost-planning page or contact InMedism with a concise case summary. Detailed medical records should be shared only through the approved secure process.

Does InMedism perform the procedure?

No. Licensed hospitals and clinicians provide all diagnosis and treatment. InMedism coordinates access and the surrounding medical-travel journey.
